The Oneidans

The Oneida are an ancient race. In their language "Onayoteaka" means "People of the Standing Stone". Their ancestry traces to what is now known as New York state in the United States. Their original lands encompassed a large swath easily spanning the border of New York state to either of its northern and southern borders.

The Story of the Oneida cannot be told in any accuracy without including their long trek to what is now known as present day Green Bay Wisconsin. As they were pushed out of their lands a large number of the tribes were relocated to this area but even more numbers are spread throughout the United States. There are actually more Oneida living outside the tribal boundaries than live inside its boundaries proper.

Oneida Today

The revenue generated by gaming on Oneida land has brought a renaissance of resuscitation to an ailing and strained community. Kudos should go to the wise people in charge of the tribe today. They have seen fit to reinvest the money into the community improving roads, building infrastructure and reaching out to all the tribal members and their offspring who were spread all over the United States during the "Americanization" years. As of the last census, 6,000 Oneidas live on the reservation proper and 17,000 to 20,000 live throughout the United States. Because the Dawes Act caused most of the Oneida to lose their land most of the people who live within the boundaries of the Oneida reservation are non-Native Americans. Still, the Oneida continue to be a caring, generous big-hearted people. In keeping with the old customs they take care of their elders
